So if you want something to do on your next visit, or something to enjoy with the kids one weekend, consider one of these 17 great Cambridgeshire events:
- Straw Bear Festival, Whittlesey (January)
The Straw Bear Festival is a long tradition in Whittlesey that is always done on the Tuesday following plough Monday. For visitors attending the festival you get to enjoy a really fun spectacle and atmosphere. The straw bear dances through the street along with various dancers and performers and the bear is then burnt in the evening.
- World Pea-Shooting Championship, Witcham (July)
If you’re looking for a high-octane, adrenaline filled event then the world pea-shooting championship is for you. It works with contestants blowing a pea through a tube towards a target. The fun is in the event itself, and also, the different tube designs that contestants use.
- Strawberry Fair, Midsummer Common (June)
The Strawberry Fair is a really wholesome family event held on the lush grasses of Midsummer Common. It involves a parade, live music, a film festival and crafts and stalls. It has a really relaxed vibe and works well as a day out for the family.
- Cambridge Shakespeare Festival (July)
Attracting thousands of visitors, the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival is an annual event held in the city centre. It runs for eight weeks and involves all kinds of performances outdoors, as well as various special events at different venues.
- Chariots Of Fire (September)
Chariots Of Fire is a charity event where teams of side race a course that runs through the city, starting at the Queens Green. It’s a lot of fun for everybody attending and taking part, creating a really fantastic atmosphere throughout Cambridge on the day.
- Open Cambridge (September)
This event is a really great one for those new to Cambridge, or looking to pay a visit. During this time there are special talks, exhibitions and tours literally unlocking the secrets to the heritage, history and culture of Cambridge.
- Ramsey Steam & Fire Show
(Ramsey)
The show is held annually to help raise money for the The Firefighters Charity. It is great for kids who will love the big fire engines, steam vehicles and displays held throughout the event.
- Ely’s Eel Fayre, Ely (July)
Ely’s Eel Fayre is full of fun with food, arts, entertainment and stalls to enjoy. The event is ‘led’ by Ellie The Eel, the famous eel of the area who kids will love. The eel throwing event (throwing stuffed eels) is also quite the attraction and something you have to have a go at whilst you’re there.
- Huntington Carnival, Huntington (August)
The carnival in Huntington is known for its incredible parade, featuring all kinds of fun stalls to enjoy. In addition, there are air shows, stalls, rides and events throughout the day to look forward to with the whole family.
- St Neots Folk Festival (September)
The Folk Festival is held annually at St Neots Folk Club. It features different local artists, as well as various musicians from the UK and sometimes further afield. A great event for folk lovers.
- Horror At Hinchingbrooke House (October)
If you are looking for an American style horror event at Halloween that beats pumpkin carving, this is the event for you. It has special scare zones with amazing props and scary actors pretending to be horrifying characters sure to get your adrenaline pumping.
- The Old Riverport Uke Festival, Saint Ives PE27 (October)
The ukulele festival in Saint Ives is not just for the ukulele lovers wanting to see the world’s best at playing this quirky instrument. There are also workshops, open mike sessions and various stalls and sellers to enjoy too.
- Cambridge Ska Festival (September)
If you love ska you need to make your way to the Cambridge Ska Festival. It has been running for over 20 years and pulls in some of the most amazing performers across the country and locally. There is plenty of room for skanking and dancing too, so you can stretch your legs and move to the music all day long!
- Ely Apple Festival (October)
The Ely Apple Festival is a day long event celebrating the British apple. It is an educational event, as well as a fun event, with talks and displays on growing, the environment and different types of apple. There are lots of fun competitions like apple-peeling and apple egg and spoon to keep the kids interested.
- Wisbech Christmas Fayre (December)
For all the Christmas spirit, shopping and food you can manage, this is the event for you. German sausages, cards stalls, local beers, hot chestnuts and balloon modelling are just some of the food and fancies you can enjoy at this event. It’s a great event for the family.
- Cambridge Northern Soul Festival (November)
If you love a bit of Northern Soul this is the perfect event for you. As well as leading acts you can also enjoy Northern Soul music played by leading DJ’s keeping the event lively and loud long after the gigs have finished.
If you want to go to an eclectic, inspirational and varied music and performance event, this is the one for you. It often joins up with the Strawberry Fair mentioned above, but also can take place within the city of Cambridge too. Expect the unexpected with magicians, circus performers, singers and poetry to name a few performance types.
