12 Things To Do At Night In Beautiful Cambridgeshire

Cambridge at Night

Here are 12 great things to do in Cambridgeshire after dark to make the most of this beautiful county at all hours.

There is so much to enjoy in Cambridgeshire by day, including gorgeous natural spaces like the University Botanical Gardens, Grantchester Meadows and Midsummer Common. We also love a spot of punting, some delicious treats from any of the fantastic cafes around serving dishes like yummy locally sourced sausage rolls and fresh greengage desserts (often picked locally).

Of course, there are 24 hours in a day and if you have recently moved to Cambridge to study, retire or work, or if you are visiting, you will want to make the most of this stunning part of the UK in the evening too.

To help you make the most of beautiful Cambridgeshire after dark, here are 12 things to do at night in this stunning destination:

1.   Ghost Walking

Cambridge offers all manner of ghost walking tours to let you know more about the spooky goings on in the area. The city itself is absolutely overrun by ghosts, apparently, especially Little St Mary’s Lane which is thought to have all kinds of ghostly goings on. A demon dog, called a Black Shuck, is particularly famous for haunting this part of the city with red eyes, sharp teeth and a drooling mouth. If you see him, you are said to be dead within a year of your sighting.

Most tours aren’t too scary though, with stories like that of Black Shuck told in an engaging way, so older children will probably enjoy going along too. It’s a great way to get some interesting history, stories and a different look at the city, especially the oldest buildings which have some beautiful architecture to admire (in between the ghost spotting).

2.   A Theatre Visit

There is always something going on in Cambridgeshire when it comes to theatre. There are often performances being put on by the university itself, including the famous annual Christmas carol service. There are also multiple theatres like the Mumford Theatre and the Cambridge Arts Theatre with performances showing regularly, as well as annual art festivals showcasing new talent.

3.   Outdoor Cinemas

In summer outdoor cinemas are run in various locations across the entire county. These cinemas are fantastic because you can take along a picnic and some blankets and enjoy some al fresco films with your family. Sometimes these cinemas are held in cars in a drive-in style event and so, are open during the Autumn and Spring.

4.   Music

Music is almost always going on somewhere in Cambridgeshire, especially in the city where students perform at open mic nights, progressive musicians perform at various venues like the Cambridge Junction, and famous artists perform at places like the Cambridge Corn Exchange. Lovers of classical music can also look at attending the West Road Concert Hall as well as the university for more traditional music.

5.   Cocktails

Cambridge has some wonderful cocktail bars for you to enjoy if you fancy a posh tipple or two. From franchises like Revolution, All Bar One and Lola Lo, to the more quirky The Old Bicycle Shop, Hidden Rooms and The Roof Terrace at the Varsity Hotel – there’s a cocktail bar to suit you.

6.   Clubbing

For nights when you want to go ‘out out’ there are nightclubs all over Cambridgeshire to enjoy. Ballarde is currently closed, although MASH attracts a large crowd too. Many of the bars also open late and have plenty of room for dancing.

7.   Escape Rooms

Escape rooms are huge all over the world at the moment and Cambridge is no different. There are new venues popping up all over the place offering new experiences, something that is likely to occur more often as the pandemic comes under control.

8.   The Cambridge Night Festival

Cambridge Junction holds a festival most years which is a dance music event. It is a huge party that is ticketed and well worth attending if you enjoy the headliners playing on any given year.

9.   Delicious Meals

Cambridgeshire has some incredible restaurants offering exceptional meals in every cuisine. Restaurant 22 has been open for 40 years, backs onto the River Cam and serves European/ British classy fare. Provost in Peterborough, Midsummer House, The Old Bridge Hotel and Vanderlyle are all of a similar fine dining style and high-quality feel. For less high-grade but still very delicious and hearty meals, the Millworks, Pint Shop, The Anchor Pub or Stem & Glory (vegan) are great alternatives.

10.                   Camping

If you are visiting Cambridgeshire for a trip there are some phenomenal camping spots for those who love the great outdoors. When the sun sets and you’ve got your campfire going, the fresh Cambridgeshire countryside really comes to life and gives you a healthy dose of clean air and natural positivity.

More wild campsites exist amongst more rustic and overgrown settings, as well as luxurious glamping options for people who like to camp with as much convenience as possible. It’s a great choice if you want to enjoy Cambridgeshire and the nature it has on offer, as well as all the other attractions.

11.                   Stargazing

Stargazing in Cambridgeshire is a big pastime with many amazing dark spots across the county to stargaze from. Grab a flask of hot chocolate, some snacks and a blanket and checkout Cambridge Astronomical Association for information about the latest events. Alternatively go to The Great Fen, Wicken Fen or Jesus Green on a clear night and see what you can spot!

12.                   An Indoor Cinema

There are several indoor cinemas in Cambridge, but the Picture House is one of the most well known because it is so old and stylish. It was opened in the 30’s and has been taken over by a few different companies. These days it remains a cinema venue which not only offers modern movies, but plenty of indie options too. If you really want to make the most of the arty side of film, checkout the Cambridge Film Festival, or perhaps plan your visit to fit it in.

All the options above may or may not be affected by any Covid-19 laws or guidance in place at the time. Always ring ahead to avoid disappointment.
